actually my theory is more leaned towards kick start bikes, because some people like to 'pump' the kick starter before starting, the action causes the piston to move (i tested kicking it when i was changing my piston rings) up and down the cylinder.
therefore wouldn't this cause a vacuum to suck the fuel into the carb thus overflowing it?
but then ah... sometimes if you don't pump, you can't start the bike, so.... dunno leh

another thing i noticed is that when you've just started your bike, your rpm tends to be lower than usual, that could be the cause for bikes dying while starting. could be due to a weak batt not producing enough current for all the electricals in the bike, or just cold carb walls + damp air.
