Ya, Spore laws tend to give advantage to the pedestrian in any sort of traffic accident.
The bus would have to be speeding to produce a such a huge dent on the windscreen.
It is also unlikely that an old man would make sudden movements unless pre-meditated, that would have resulted the bus being unable to stop in time (read: bus was speeding).
It doesn't seem like that road has blind spots, that would have caused even a slow-moving bus to be unable to avoid the accident.
You ask me and I would think that the bus was going at a very very decent speed.
Life is short. Just another reminder to take care of yourself when you should.

According to the news report, impact at 34 km/h and it had just pulled out from the bus stop.
Sometimes I question the wisdom of using such a powerful bus on Singapore roads.
For the victim to be hit at the front, the body found behind the bus and in a mutilated condition says a lot about this accident. How could people still defend the BC is really beyond me.

Question: how did the victim even managed to end up on the road in the first place? Is the braking speed of buses the same of that of cars (inertia), such that even if the BC did brake as an attempt to prevent the sudden situation, will it eventually stop in time to prevent both axles from going over the victim?

Could be both party.... Theory is theory, and my theory goes:
First thing first, driver might have confirmed old man not crossing right before the yellow box, so while checking on the right mirror, old man thought bus would stop before yellow box thus crossed... Both could be at the wrong judgement at the same time and ended up no one see the old man crossing and BAM!!! Even the passengers also dunno what the bus hit until BC and pax got down the bus and saw the gruesome scene...
34km/h would have been taken from the telematic device since they go for an accurate speed ending with a "4" instead of rounding up to 40km/h or 35 km/h when no one knows the exact speed, but telematic tells the controller the actual speed...

Ended up being hit in the middle of the windscreen means BC totally didn't see him coming when her sight had likely been diverted to something, say checking of mirrors which drivers should normally do before and after pulling out from the bus stop...
With the speed of 34km/h after pulling out of the busstop, the bus was certaingly still accelerating without anyone catching the attention of the old man crossing... If this is true, it can thus be the case of his body behind the bus...
Also, taken into consideration that the old man was crossing with his walkingstick, means he can only cross at slow speed which high chances are he would have thought the bus would stop before the yellow box, but as the driver sight was diverted to something else, bus was coming straight at him, he had not enough time to get back to the kerb, which would imply how the crash happened right in the middle of the windscreen...
If we were to visualise from the back of the old man corssing with the walking stick, was he crossing in a 90 degree angle perpendicular to the road surface or was he crossing in an actue angle perpendicular to the road surface?
Because in an acute angle against the windscreen + the speed of the bus, the victim suffers more impact than at 90 degree...
Heard that the old man did stop but he was standing at the side divider which cause him to lost balance and unfortunately bus also cant brake in time..Nothing to do with bus horsepower/Acceleration..Give you slow bus also if unlucky then meaning unlucky lor

If the fall happened at such a time that it is impossible for the BC to avoid impact... Then it is simply negligence on the part of the victim.
But if it could be proven that the bus could have had enough time to brake... Then it's another story
SBS2621X (BNDEP 38) brokedown at opp blk 230 bus stop this morning. A recovery truck was spotted behind it at about 8.15 am.
3602U broke down at after entering filter lane into TPE from Wdls, causeing jam at the 2 lane road. Engine and interior lights still on, probably is tyre puncture or other breakdown reasons. Another 161 alr left with overloaed pax from 3602U when the bus was alr full at wdls int.

Yes, I was going to point out this. It was a head-on collision, not a sideswipe. To be hit the the middle of the windscreen with such impact, it will be very difficult for the driver to absolve herself of any blame (especially if she claimed she did not see the old man) and get off the hook even if the old man was also negligent.
Compare that to the position and magnitude of damage to the windscreen of the SBS Transit bus at the Bendemeer Road fatal accident.
I was not expecting SMRT Buses to put their telemetrics system to full use so quickly, but this is going to prove immensely useful in their investigation.

An advantage for investigators...
SBS9843B (CGBP 81) brokedown at Tampines Int earlier in the day. A recovery truck was spotted at around 5.30pm and the bus was then driven back to depot by a mechanic accompanied by the recovery truck.
Unknown habit broke down at BKE (towards PIE) in between the exit and entrance of Dairy Farm Road...spotted around 5.20pm..
* SBS7413Y on tow, plying KJE > BKE > PIE @ 1425hr...
SMRT Batch 3 MAN A22 on 61 involved...
Yesterday SBS8899Y on 506 brokedown at the bus stop aft exiting PIE (twrds jurong east)
Engine cover opened. Time: exactly 1805hrs
I was on this bus. issued bus breakdown ticket
cause of breakdown: Gearbox Jam
what happened
on the expressway aft tpy exit, the bus suddenly jerk & cant move even though press accelerator (as though in N gear)
but it was fine again when the bus stopped for a while jn the middle of expressway before stevens rd exit. then it happened again when approaching the bukit batok exit.
then BC decided to declare breakdown
the front camera of the bus, if in operation, would also be useful in establishing many facts along with their excellent telematics system.
