Bollards and plates that pop up at interchanges (Prime, Tuesday, 15 Feb 2011)
A high-tech security system designed to stop car bomb attacks is tested at SMRT Corp’s Woodlands bus interchange.
The system makes use of heavy duty metal bollards and spiked plates that pop up instantaneously form beneath the tarmac upon detection of an unauthorised vehicle.
It has been in place at the facility since last May.
The Public Transport Security Committee (PTSC) told The Straits Times that automated system was more effective and less costly than manual barrier methods.
The committee partnered SecurEdge, an ST Kinetics company, to design, develop and test the “innovative” security system “that automatically detect and be deployed against” vehicles carrying explosives.
The system; which has been in the works since 2008, integrates automated control systems linking to an array of sensors to bollards.
The PTSC said it is still reviewing the feasibility of implementing the system at other bus interchanges.
If approved, the most likely places would be the integrated transport hubs that house interchanges for buses and trains. Examples include those in Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio, Sengkang, Clementi, Serangoon and Boon Lay.
Similar systems have, however, been employed in other countries, especially in sensitive installations such as embassies, nuclear power plants and defence and law-enforcements facilities.
A few reasons why WRI/WLBP was selected for this trial;
1) Sometimes drivers mistook the first entrance for Woodlands Square
2) F1RST underground interchange
3) WRDEP is based there!
Buses in the picture is a Habit, TIB10XX?, and an OC.
Now I know why are there those gantries at the entrance and why are there 2 seperate lanes.
but I find many cars parking at one end of the interchange at the basement next to the driveway. Are they authorised vehicles parking there?

I think the LTA should paint the white arrow markings before the traffic lights leading to the bus interchange red to deter vehicles from straying into the interchange. This should also apply to other interchanges too. Some motorists may miss seeing the No Entry sign leading to the bus interchanges.

Each Interchange layout is different, So not all bus interchanges are suitable for this trial.
Sengkang interchange layout is almost similar to boon lay, And I can't imagine if boon lay undergoes trials like this.
Can give GL1 a try, or those 'quiet' terminals.
Wonder if SBS buses and its vehicles is welcome there... XD

As long as the place is a bus interchange, they are allowed there, unless the interchange close down...

And some cheeky drivers try to save time by going from WDL Ave 3 to WDL Ave 7 by going to the interchange.
