On SMRT buses too, as I saw, BC spoke to routemaster through the mic. And such a small device can transmit through a certain frequency to a faw away destination is very interesting.

regarding the call from bus to OCC by driver thingy, every bus has a 3G or GSM connection. for sbs transit, this is supplied by singtel.
the location of the bus is updated via GPRS/3G data connection back to OCC. trip details are relayed back to WLAN receivers at interchanges at the start/end of the trip. -

luckly the rate is expensive sia, if not hor later got some maids inside the bus call very long. If on svc30 they can hang up on the phone from bedok to boon lay sia.

the built in phone is by singtel, and uses satellite. it cost 60 cents/min then..
eventually it became a white elephant as mobile phones and calls are getting cheaper -
