yes, i agree... if the person involved is too confident or proud, he or she might not accept what others say to him or her.
i've got several ppl telling me off before, such as
"wee, u need to watch ur temper", or
"wee, u have to be careful wif ur words, ppl might get offended", or
"wee, pls spare a thought for other ppl, u have been very mean", etc.
i dont usually defend for myself on the spot. i wud think for a while, if i'm really in the wrong. can even go home and digest it and make sure i improve myself or try my best that i wont do it again.
but if it's an accusation which i know straightaway i didnt do it, such as
"wee, how can u steal his money?" or
"wee, dont call ppl a b-i-t-c-h or s-l-u-t".
shudnt i defend myself?
