What is a professional?

I notice here that the term 'professional' is used quite a lot. Women say talk about marrying a professional. Parents say they want their children to become professionals.
Just what professions fall under this definition of professional and why do those qualify and others don't?
We all know that doctors, surgeons, scientists, judges, computer programmers, engineers, architects, etc. are considered professionals but what about artists, actors, athletes, dancers, musicians, social workers, librarians, teachers, etc.?

professional here refers to a career specialising in certain job aspect, be it lawyer, doctor, dancers, musicians and etc. as long as they are good at what they are doing, i will never deny them as a professional.
anyway, i do notice that the profession range in singapore is getting narrow and limited.
unlike some other countries, people are more daring to venture into unpopular occupations because of their interest, even it means bringing in lesser revenue. -
