one will never get to "buy" a car in singapore..unless u r rich enuff to make a one time payment for it..Originally posted by blurgirl:always wanted a car but felt the 10 yr payment a bit ridiculous. ;p

wat good does it do when the revenue for LTA is hit? yes..u can bring down the cost of buying a car then, but without sufficient funds, how can a good network of roads n other facilities bi built to ensure the smooth running of traffic then?Originally posted by the Bear:actually, that's the excuse given and everyone ate it all up...
a simple non-transferable ballot would have solved everything...
instead, it's a money-sucking system..
how to keep the cost of the COE down? simple...
throw the agents out of the system...
then make bidders pay what they bid
have a closed system where the amount bid is not known
but all this will drive the cost of the COE down, and therefore Revenue for LTA would be hammered...
or if you really do not want to scalp the people, the ballot... non-transferable.. you HAVE to buy the car when you get the chance to..

u tink they aren't as good as they can bi..go overseas n u will find lots of well developed countries using singapore's traffic network as reference..as to how a good network can bi built..its not only abt building roads n networks..it includes the pricing of cars to curb demand..road pricing..n everything which determines n ensures tt traffic flow is at its possible best for most of the time..Originally posted by the Bear:they aren't as good as they can be..
sometimes i do wonder why we are hit... make the roads good and all that? maybe.. we really don't need the "amenities" like the silly "15 minutes to Boon Lay" which are put everywhere and maintained at high costs... the sunk costs are high and the running costs are also very high
oh well..

paying a dollar or so for using roads during peak hrs may seem ridiculous..a scheme to suck money out of singaporeans it may seem..but there r countries where drivers r charged 4 to 5 sg dollars for using just a part of the expressway..yes..cars r cheap in those countries..but add up all these costs n u will find maintaining cars in those countries isn't cheap at all..

heh. i tot all auctions operate tt way? =POriginally posted by the Bear:I was overseas...
they did not have to scalp their citizens.... they have pretty good roads.. but heck! maybe their revenue comes from elsewhere else?
what i guess the people are sick and tired of is being told that this is "the best and ONLY method" and we should "be thankful for it" and maybe "worship the ground they walk on" about it...
got a question... ever see the COE price auction? i did once... it was $1 until about 10 minutes before close.. it became $50 then jumped to about $23,000 when the dealers moved in..
i bet the LTA heaved a collective sigh of relief...
serve the citizen, not treat them as chattel
as for that car, i'll probably never buy a car in singapore... where almost everyone is asset-rich and cash poor..

yah..i get wat u mean..abt ppl getting sick n tired of being told this is the best n only method..n they shld bi thankful for it...but i dun tink the msg was meant to bi put across in such a way..i tink they just wanted the ppl to understand tt they r doing wat is necessary to ensure things run smoothly..
every country has its own methods of earning revenue..n the way of running a country depends on lots of factors..for example..u can't compare the traffic conditions in australia n singapore..australia has so much land tt even if they priced cars very cheaply..make the cost of maintaining it very low..they can built lots of roads to make sure tt the road capacity can handle all the cars..tts just simply not possible in singapore.
hmm..if u just consider the quantity..of cos building more roads will cost more..in the case of aussie..like wat i haf said..different countries generate revenue using different ways...n the cost of building per unit length of road in singapore will definitely bi higher than tt of australia..lots of things to consider in singapore..esp wif all the skyscapers n all the high rise HDB which could bi found everywhere..extra care has to bi taken not to disturb the foundations of these structures..Originally posted by the Bear:funny... did i just read you correctly?
build lots and lots of roads is cheaper than building fewer roads?
anyway, i know.. i know... thing is that, better methods were offered and all were sneered at...
as for the COE auction, if it is taken away from the dealers, do you think there will be continued upward pressure? dealers NEED the COE... if individuals bid for it, and pay what they bid, the upward pressure will not be so great..
if a desperate case throws in a $60,000 bid, he's going to get it hell or high water.. but he'll pay the lowest bid of maybe $19,000.. is that really fair?
Die u sumamabeech~Originally posted by jOhO:i've thought of owning a car here.
if i do, i'd probably go for those left 2 years on COE, pay not more than 5.5k depreciation a year.
but i don't becos my income super unstable, FOR NOW!

Well try calculate what is your own financial status and do some consideration whether you can afford the car or not. And whether is it better and more economical than taking public transport.Originally posted by elawee:me wanted to buy a car.....but everytime i tell someone of my plans, i will get suffocated by a king size wet blanket....or rather donna...
