if its a flash gallery, then you dont need much scripts. any kinda hosting will do.
but if it is something like sggirls gallery, then u will have to be more specific liao.
galleries that are built from php can run on linux/windows environment whereas asp gallery can run only on windows.

for a start, if you do not have too many photos to showcase, just grab a linux host. less confusing for u.
everytime when u wanna setup a gallery of pictures, design them in html and ftp the page together with the files.
when u simply have got too many photos to manage, then worry about getting a gallery software. -

u cant tell the difference by looking at the web appearance.
both kinda hosting/script can generate EXACTLY the same kinda web pages because the ultimate web pages are in HTML format.
it is the backend which does the generating of HTML web pages that is different.
if u insist to see a difference, then web pages which ends with .php is php. web pages that ends with .asp is asp. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
the purpose of you needing to know what kinda hosting to use is when u know what kinda scripts/gallery u would be using, which in this case, u dont. -

get your hands dirty meaning:
- go to web hosting companies (e.g. http://www.usonyx.net/ or http://www.8toinfinity.com.sg) and ask to apply for domain name and web hosting service like jon
- pay for it
- host your pages and get it work
- learn along the way
in another word, just do it, ask later. even when u are paying a little more ultimately.
ok, before you understand what the major technical differences between linux and windows hosting, u need to know how script benefits you.
look at this forum. how it automates when someone post a new reply and gets displayed.
look at blog, how it automates when someone post a new entry and gets it published.
u cant expect jason to sit behind the computer 24/7 and change the web pages everytime someone post a new reply right?
so, the beauty of scipts is to like a programmed web pages that do everything by itself.
now, different type of hosting can accomodate different type of scripts.
windows support windows kinda script e.g. ASP
linux support linux kinda script e.g. PHP

and i got my powerbook 17" with 1.5gb ram today. -
without going in depth, both scripts are pretty much the same. both are able perform certain degree of functionalities.
metaphorically, its like comparing the differences between P3 and powerbook when it comes to plain net surfing. both are actually quite the same, just that the latter is overspending. -
