KÖNZERT X – ExplorationsJoin the Sembawang Wind Orchestra (SWO) as we bring to you our 10th annual concert entitled “Explorations”. We are pleased to present the Singapore Premiere of four exciting music literature.
With Principal Trombonist, Mr. Timothy Leow,
“The Trombone Concerto Op. 114b” by Derek Bourgeois features three contrasting movements demanding high levels of technique and musicality from the soloist.
“Per la flor del Iliri blau” by JoaquÃn Rodrigo (The Blue Irish Lily Flower) is based on a fable about three brothers searching for the blue irish flower to cure the illness afflicting their Father, the King who promises riches to anyone who finds it. The youngest son finds the flower but is killed by his jealous brothers on his return. As the author says even Nature weeps his death. The highlight of this work is the recurring motif stemming from the usual lyrical fullness of the composerÂ’s music and the central theme with chivalrous air, inspired by a Valencian melody.
“Variations on a Theme of Glinka” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov showcases solo oboe and band. Performing this will be Concert Master and Principal Oboist, Mr. Andrew Ng.
SWO will also perform
“The Valencian Widow” by Aram Khachaturian. First performed on 14th Nov 1940 at Komsomol Theater in Moscow, Lenin, the music, written for the Spanish comedy by Lope de Vega, was Khachaturian’s first major score for the dramatic stage.
Although there are no authentic tunes in the Valencian Widow, the music is characteristically Spanish by local colouring and thematic inflexion, which is not unusual in Spanish-inspired works by Russian composers. SWO will perform the six movements in this suite.
