like the KISS story u mentioned, if u were the man, and u gave ur eyes to the woman u love, u not even cant see her, but u make her life sheng bu ru si, coz she will only live a life of guilt and indebtedness towards you.
of course u can say it will be the same if u die mah.. but if u die without letting her knowing where u had gone, then at least she can still move on.

Now, from how I see it, here is the paradox: for the sake of his/her happiness and security, one would do many things to ensure his/her partner gets that. It may even go to such an extreme that it requires a leg, arm, eyes, liver or even a life.
Then when one gladly gives such sacrifice, with or without the partner's acknowledgement, the partner will feel hurt and asked, "What happened?" in the case of his/her acknowledgement. Without his/her acknowledgement, aka one left quietly, he/she will ask, "Where did he/she go? Why he/she left without a word?".
In both cases, leaving quietly or letting him/her know, one will still feel hurt and sad BECAUSE he/she loves the person. Love comes in a package: sweet, cuddly, fragrant, fuzzy, bitter, tough, hurting, etc, etc. You get what I mean.
Unless the couple has something to hold on to or have faith in a common thing, ie love for each other, then will they overcome the many obstacles they will face together and grow stronger in their relationship. Its also a testament of how deep and strong their love for each other is.

I don't think what you said is *beep*, your description of love is more towards the well being and happiness of the one you loved. Selfish love is that of those who want to possess the person no matter what and without sparing a thought for that person. -
