Continued positive home form crucial to Dynamo bid
Although having been granted a 3-0 forfeit victory at AS Roma's expense when referee Anders Frisk was struck by a missile from the crowd at the Stadio Olimpico on the opening matchday, FC Dynamo Kyiv have maintained their push for a place in the knockout phase of the competition with seven points from four outings.
Diogo Rincón was among the goals on the last occasion FC Dynamo Kyiv hosted Italian opposition
Gavrancic goal
The record books will show that the Ukrainians were 45 minutes from a famous victory in the Italian capital following Goran Gavrancic's 29th-minute goal, but since that match Dynamo have been in excellent form at home, handing Bayer 04 Leverkusen a 4-2 defeat at the Valeriy Lobanovskiy stadium before taking an early two-goal lead against Real Madrid CF although the Spanish side hit back through Raúl González and LuÃs Figo to salvage a point. Their only defeat to date came at the Santiago Bernabéu when a 35th-minute goal from Michael Owen separated the sides on matchday three.
Maiden voyage
AS Roma have already been eliminated from the reckoning for a place in the knockout stage, although Luigi Del Neri's side showed some battling qualities when securing a 1-1 draw at home to Leverkusen thanks to Vincenzo Montella's equaliser three minutes into stoppage time. This engagement, however, will mark their first trip to the Ukraine.
Lucky 13
Dynamo, for their part, have played 13 European club competition matches against Italian opponents, their first victory coming in Rome following a sequence of four draws and eight defeats. The Ukrainians last hosted an Italian side when facing FC Internazionale Milano on matchday six of the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage, drawing 1-1 with Daniele Adani putting the visitors ahead after 68 minutes only for Diogo Rincón to equalise six minutes from time. The result actually meant that Dynamo finished bottom of the group while Inter were denied a place in the knockout stage as they finishing third while Arsenal FC and FC Lokomotiv Moskva occupied the top two places.

CL Preview: Dynamo Kiev-Roma
Dynamo Kiev welcome a troubled Roma side to Ukraine, where they hope to continue their march towards the second round of the competition in what will be a freezing Valery Lobanovskiy stadium.
Background
Dynamo Kiev have surprised everyone in the Champions League so far, and are one of the three teams sitting on 7 points in Group B, alongside Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.
Dynamo know a win here would almost guarantee a spot in the next round, and they will surely be up to the task, having held Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw in the last fixture – a game they should have won after leading 2-0.
However, Roma will be out to wipe the memory of the last game between these two sides – the match was abandoned at half-time and awarded as a 3-0 victory to the Ukrainian side after referee Anders Frisk was hit with a metal object thrown from the crowd.
Roma have had a torrid season so far and as well as sitting on the bottom of Group B here, they are almost in the relegation zone in the Italian league. They are coming off 3 straight losses against Udinese and Reggina in the Serie A and Siena in the Coppa Italia respectively.
However, coach Luigi Del Neri is optimistic about the team’s fortunes this season and was typically upbeat when commenting on the year so far. “It’s a difficult situation but I think we just need a bit of luck to change our mentality and the whole environment around us.”
Team News
Dynamo Kiev
Coach Joseph Szabo has a full strength side at his disposal and welcomes back Brazilian defender Rodolfo and Yuriy Dmytrulin – the latter returning after a long-term knee injury.
Roma
Roma have no such luck and are without a host of stars. Vincenzo Montella and Francesco Totti have both stayed in the capital due to a case of the flu and a death in the family respectively. Defender Christian Panucci and midfielder Daniele De Rossi are both suspended whilst Mancini, Marco Delvecchio, Olivier Dacourt, Philippe Mexes and Cristian Chivu all miss the match through injury. The volatile Antonio Cassano is expected to captain the side in the absence of Totti and should be partnered up-front by Egyptian striker Mido.
Probable Line-Ups
Dynamo Kiev: (5-3-2) Shovkovsky; Ghioane, Sablic, Gavrancic, Rodolfo, El Kaddouri; Gusev, Yussuf, Diogo Rincon; Verpakovskis, Kleber
Roma: (4-4-2) Pelizzoli; Sartor, Scurto, Dellas, Cufre; Aquilani, Perrotta, De Martino, DÂ’Agostino; Mido, Cassano
Players to Watch
Diogo Rincon: The forward has been in fine form in recent times and much will be expected of him to lead Dynamo to victory here. If the young Roma defence can shut him down, then it will go a long way to securing a rare victory for the Italians.
Antonio Cassano: Has an extra responsibility after being named captain in the absence of Totti. It will be interesting to see how the young starlet handles it and if Roma are to win this game then he will have to stand up. Expect the unexpected.
Preview - Dynamo Kiev vs AS Roma
Crisis club Roma will go into Tuesday's Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev desperate to prove they are still a force in European football.
They will have to do so, however, without captain Francesco Totti and top-scorer Vincenzo Montella, neither of whom have travelled to Ukraine.
Luigi Del Neri's side have already been eliminated from Europe's elite competition after claiming just one point from their opening four fixtures.
But goalkeeper Ivan Pelizzoli claims they will head into the clash in a more confident mood and, for the first time this season, will not be under any pressure.
``We will definitely play with more calmness,'' he said. ``Seeing as we have nothing to lose.''
Calmness is what Roma lacked in their opening Champions League encounter against Dynamo in September, and their season has not recovered since.
The Ukrainian outfit were awarded a 3-0 victory by UEFA and Roma were forced to play their following two European home games behind closed doors, after referee Anders Frisk was wounded by an object thrown from the stands of the Stadio Olimpico.
Since then, the Roma players have had to come to terms with the departure of coach Rudi Voller, the arrival of Del Neri, and a series of internal conflicts.
Young striker Antonio Cassano and veteran defender Christian Panucci have both clashed with their new boss and were excluded from the squad for several games before peace was finally restored.
To make matters worse, the club are still trying to fill the void left by the departure of key players Francisco Lima, Walter Samuel and Emerson during the summer.
The continued absence of Romanian defender Christian Chivu, still out of action through injury, and the failure of defenders Matteo Ferrari and Philippe Mexes to find their form have further hindered the Giallorossi.
Roma are currently just one point clear of the relegation zone and 18 points behind Serie A leaders Juventus.
``I didn't think the departures of Samuel and Emerson would affect us as much as it has,'' admitted Pelizzoli, who has conceded 21 league goals this season.
It comes as no surprise that Roma's sporting director Franco Baldini has come under fire for his summer transfer policy that has yet to pay dividends.
Totti added: ``This is the worst situation since I have been at Rome.'' One of the bright spots of a terrible start to the campaign has been the form of Montella, who only three months ago was on the transfer list.
However, Serie A's joint top-scorer is suffering from flu and has not made the journey. He remains in the Eternal City along with Totti, who has been granted permission to miss the match due to personal reasons.
Last month's draw against Bayer Leverkusen has given the Italian team a glimmer of hope of qualifying for the UEFA Cup, but to do so they must finish in third position.
Dynamo, meanwhile, have all to play for as they are currently level on seven points with both Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, while Roma prop up Group B with one point.
Head coach Yozhef Sabo insists his players will be taking the game seriously, and reckons it will be business as usual despite a terrible weather forecast ahead of the Tuesday night clash.
``They say that tomorrow will be frost and a huge snowfall,'' he said. ``In spite of this we are preparing as usual.
``We consider Roma as a serious team with well-skilled players and a good coach. ``We are preparing for this game very seriously because it's wrong to underestimate the opponent before the fight.''
