Coppa Italia Preview: Atalanta-Juventus
With the Italian cup low on the BianconeriÂ’s list of priorities, Atalanta have the perfect chance to progress to the next round. Juventus will only field their reserves but will be a tough challenge none the less.
BACKGROUND
Atalanta sit on the bottom of Serie A after a poor start to life back in ItalyÂ’s top division. Although the season is still in its infancy Atalanta look destined for Serie B. The newly promoted side have yet to manage a win, securing seven draws and five defeats. MandorliniÂ’s side have conceded too many goals and not scored enough in the league, but have the perfect chance to progress against a reserve Juventus side. A victory against the Turin giants would be the perfect confidence booster, providing the perfect tonic for a surge in the Serie standings.
Juventus coach Fabio Capello has stated that he will use the match as a chance to give some of his forgotten players a chance to prove their value to the club. “This is the right opportunity for people to illustrate their worth,” Capello was reported to have said. The Bianconeri have one of the most impressive squads in European football and will have plenty of potential match winners at their disposal despite the absence of more established players.
Sources close to the club suggest that Mark Iuliano and Nicola Legrottaglie will start in defence, while Olivier Kapo and Marcelo Zalayeta should partner in attack. As JuventusÂ’ first team have continued to sweep aside all before them this season, it should be interesting to see how players such as Kapo perform. The match provides several players with the opportunity to stake a serious claim for a first team spot with an impressive display in Bergamo.
TEAM NEWS
Atalanta:
The coach of Atalanta, Mandorlini, has most of the players at his disposal and above all no absences in the probable starting line up. Defender Fabio Rustico and midfielder Albertini are still out injured and will not take part.
Juventus:
Although Capello has selected Nedved in the squad, the Czech midfielder is unlikely to start the match. Del Piero has been rested and will not travel to Bergamo. CapelloÂ’s final line-up is not certain, but players such as Olivera, Kapo and Zalayeta should get the chance to show their worth.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Atalanta:
The experience of Zenoni in midfield will be crucial for the home team in Bergamo. Zenoni has played many important matches and has been on the winning side against the Bianconeri before.
Juventus:
After it seemed that Olivier Kapo was not in CapelloÂ’s plans, the pacy winger has impressed recently, deployed in attack. Kapo has the pace and skill to test any defence, with CapelloÂ’s help, the young prospect could become one of the most devastating players in Serie A. Just as Henry was converted into a striker, Kapo can enjoy the same success, but is equally effective on the wing.
PROBABLE STARTING XIs
Atalanta (4-3-3):
Taibi - Rivalta, Sala, Natali, Bellini - Zenoni, Bernardini, Marcolini - Montolivo, Budan, Saudati..
Juventus (4-4-2):
Chimenti - Thuram, Iuliano, Legrottaglie, Birindelli - Olivera, Blasi, Appiah, Kapo - Zalayeta Ibrahimovic.
Coppa Italia Preview: Roma-Siena
With the Coppa Italia being the only winnable competition left for Roma this season, they are expected to play a strong side in front of their home crowd in this first leg meeting against Siena on Friday night.
Background
The Giallorossi know that this is their last chance for a trophy this season. With the Coppa Italia being their only real shot at silverware with it only being the middle of November shows how poor this Roma side has been up until now.
During the week it has got even worse in the capital with both players and staff pointing fingers at each other. Cufre, Aquilani, Montella and Del Neri have all had their say among others on the reason why Roma have been playing poorly when the real fact is they all have to look at themselves. A couple of players being the exception, such as Cufre and Montella, RomaÂ’s squad has been lacking the spirit and desire the Romanisti demand.
With this now being an important match for Roma, they have called up a strong squad for the match. Totti and Cassano are likely to be involved in this match while De Rossi and Pelizzoli despite playing for Italy on Wednesday may have to play for Roma just two days later.
Siena on the other hand will feel they have a real shot at coming away from Roma with a good enough result heading into the second leg at their stadium. Despite themselves not being in a comfortable position in Serie A, they have a good spirit at the club, but their will be some bad blood between these two sides after the Taddei transfer, or rather non-transfer this summer which has left Taddei rotting away in the Siena squad, but never playing.
Team News
Roma: Montella will be rested after playing for Italy during the week and Mancini will also not play. Cufre, Panucci and Chivu are still out injured leaving a depleted defence while De Rossi should at least be put on the bench despite playing in midweek also.
Siena: Simoni id expected to put out a strong squad, but they will be without Chiumento, Colonnese, Mignani and Portanova which means Flo should come into the side as will Falsini.
Probable Line-Ups
Roma: (4-3-1-2) Pelizzoli; Sartor, Ferrari, Mexes, Candela; DÂ’Agostino, Aquilani, Perrotta; Totti; Cassano, Corvia
Siena: (4-4-2) Fortin; Nicola, Cirillo, Argilli, Falsini; Camorani, Di Donato, Vergassola, Pecchia; Chiesa, Flo
Players To Watch
Gaetano DÂ’Agostino: Should the talented midfielder play it will be his first real chance this season in the Roma side since his injury. He may be the new dimension Roma need in the midfield to hold the ball and create more chances from this area.
Simone Vergassola: The workhorse in midfield was linked with Roma last season. His constant ball winning in the midfield will make it tough for a Roma midfield already on edge. Vergassola is the key to Siena winning the midfield.
